Virtual Interviews have become more and more common as we continue to find balance with in-person, virtual, and hybrid hiring practices. There is a level of convenience, efficiency, and ease that comes with virtual interviews for employers and candidates alike. Below are some tips to help you prepare for and have a successful virtual interview.

PREP YOUR TECH

Making sure you have technology on your side is critical to a virtual interview. Using a laptop or desktop computer instead of a cell phone camera is ideal. Regardless of what camera you are using, you want to make sure your tech is fully charged, and you have a good and stable connection. A spotty internet connection can lead to a spotty interview. Test your tech before the interview, make sure your mic is working and you have access to site or link required for the interview.

CHECK YOUR SURROUNDINGS

When you are in an in person interview you have little to no control over the physical environment you are in, this is not the case for a virtual interview. Prior to the interview, establish where you are going to sit for the interview. Make sure you have adequate lighting, and a neutral background. Think about the noises that might be picked up on the mic during your interview. Chose a quite area to sit for the interview and remove any distractions you may have from the area.

DRESS TO IMPRESS

Put in as much effort into your interview attire for a virtual interview as you would for an in-person interview. Make sure you look professional and polished. Wrinkles and stains can still be seen through the camera. So, make sure you are making a good first impression with appropriate interview attire. Your face, hair, and jewelry may be getting even more attention than they would in an in-person scenario, so make sure you pay close attention to those aspects. Simple, neutral, and professional is always a safe approach.

THE ACTUAL INTERVIEW

Make sure, like an in-person interview, arrive early. This means click on the link or access the site you need 5-15 minutes early. This will show the employer you are serious about the position and can be punctual. Once the interview has started, use the virtual environment to your benefit, keep your research and notes nearby for reference, and take any notes you might find useful as the interview progresses. A key tip when in a virtual interview is eye contact. This can be tricky in a virtual environment, but remember that looking at the camera, and not at yourself is the best way to relay eye contact to the individuals interviewing you.
