Getting Results By Building A Better Candidate Experience

The emphasis on the “candidate experience” is a major trend in the talent acquisition field.

Ten years ago, the concept of ensuring a positive candidate experience was not a significant concern for many companies that were accepting applications.   Automation in the recruiting process significantly decreased the direct, person to person interaction in the recruiting process.  New technologies such as applicant tracking systems, and online applications made to improve the hiring process for businesses, significantly changed how candidates engaged with potential employers.  Candidates often had limited direct communication/contact with an employer during the application phase.  At the time, many job seekers voiced frustration about unacknowledged applications and unanswered communication attempts.

As the talent market grew more competitive for businesses, smart companies evolved to be not only mindful, but intentional about applicants having a positive experience with their business/employer brand during the application and on-boarding phases.

Understanding these changes is important, particularly during a climate of low unemployment when there is a limited talent pool. Top talent is attentive to and attracted to businesses that extend their positive culture to begin at the earliest interactions during recruitment.  Strategies to improve the candidate experience include better communication during the process, providing accurate and concise job descriptions, and promoting the employer brand using social media.
