Make 2021 A Healthy, Happy New Year For Your Employees

January 2021 is right around the corner, and New Year’s health resolutions are on everybody’s minds! During the COVID-19 pandemic, staying healthy while social distancing has taken center stage for all of us. With the fresh start to the new year, many employees may want help with their wellness goals.

LiveWell Frederick resources can help employers support their employees’ health goals. This local partnership of businesses, government, faith-based groups, educators, community groups, and health organizations is dedicated to helping Frederick County residents improve their health.

Focusing on the health of Frederick County residents is good for everyone—it’s good for individuals, it’s good for families and our communities, and it’s good for businesses, too. Adopting better health habits can reduce the incidence of conditions ranging from diabetes to heart disease to cancer and more.

To support healthy habits, employers can promote the 5-2-1-0 program. This simple yet powerful message is easy to understand and encourages everyone to:

  • Eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day

  • Reduce recreational screen time to 2 hours or less per day

  • Exercise for 1 hour a day

  • Drink water or low-fat milk, or 0 sugary drinks

A good starting point to implement the 5-2-1-0 is the LiveWell While You Work Toolkit. There are activities and resources that encourage employees to rethink their drink and reduce their sugary-drink intake.

While employees are working remotely, virtual physical fitness challenges are another way to encourage exercise and teamwork. Over 30 teams participated in the October 2020 Virtual Walk Across America Challenge, including many company teams. If your business wants to join the next virtual challenge, follow LiveWell Frederick on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates.

LiveWell resources are always available online, and keep an eye on the news section for relevant wellness topics to share with your employees. Now, more than ever, it’s time for us to come together, lean on one another, and do all we can to help our community. Together, we can begin healthier lifestyle habits that benefit our physical, mental, and emotional health.

The FCWS Business Services Team is collaborating with LiveWell Frederick to periodically provide content around the benefits of good health for all members of our business community. Please feel free to pass along to your fellow employees and other members of our business community. Thank you.
