Staff Profile: Meet Patti Lyman
Patti is an Employment and Training Consultant for Frederick County Workforce Services. We asked Patti about her role at FCWS, what she likes about workforce development, and what she enjoys doing during her time off.
What is your role at FCWS?
Employment and Training Consultant. I work people who are either unemployed or underemployed who have barriers to employment and assist with identifying and removing barriers to develop a career pathway. I provide guidance and support to meet each person's unique needs - such as career exploration, local job market information, training programs, job search, resume writing, and interview skills.
What do you like best about working in workforce development?
Getting to know my customers and providing the tools and encouragement they need to be successful in their careers. Feeling like I am making a difference in people's lives.
If you had $30,000 to donate to a workforce development program, what would you want done with it?
I would dedicate the funds to programs for stay-at-home parents who are returning to the workforce after raising their children. Being a stay-at-home parent is tough. It’s similar to being in the workforce with an extremely needy, indecisive manager. This position requires resilience, patience, organization, and focus. And there is no real end to the workday. Stay-at-home parents have developed incredible skills during their time away from the workforce and those skills are in demand in the workplace! However, employers fail to recognize this, and reentering the workforce is difficult after time away. My program would focus on providing support to those trying to re-enter the workforce as well as educating employers of their value.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family. We like to cook meals together or try new types of food at restaurants. I like staying active with walking, yoga, and weight training. I have a small container vegetable garden and love taking care of indoor and outdoor plants. Also, a good book can keep me busy for hours with a cat or two sleeping in my lap.
